Mounting criticism, costs and legal challenges to harsh registry law growing
02/09/2009...Other challenges focus on the fact that the law doesnt take into account the individual circumstances of each offenders case, instead broadly categorizing all offenders by level of dangerousness based on the crime committed without regard to their actual chances of recidivism. Although states face a July deadline for compliance with the law, no state has yet been deemed compliant many officials complain about the laws cost, contend the original state laws are more effective, and even suggest the federal requirements may in part violate their constitutional right to set their own policies. Defenders of the law, however, praise its effectiveness in creating a more consistent, uniform process for child protection nationwide. You can read more here.
